First refuge in Northern Ireland opened in Belfast.

1977

House of Commons Select Committee recommends one refuge unit per 10,000 capita.

Three Northern Ireland refuges operating – Belfast, Foyle and Coleraine.

1978

Women's Aid Federation Northern Ireland established.

1980

Domestic Violence Proceedings (NI) Order implemented.

1982

Hidden Violence – battered women in Northern Ireland, E Evason, Farset Co-op Press, 1983 published.

1980's

Refuges in Newry, North Down, Craigavon and Omagh established.

1990's

Refuges in Fermanagh, Cookstown, Ballymena, Foyle x2 and Lisburn set up. Development of Women's Aid aftercare and community based services across Northern Ireland.

1993

Bringing It Out in the Open, Monica McWilliams and Joan McKeirnan; HMSO 1993 published.

1995

Tackling Domestic Violence – A policy for Northern Ireland, published by DHSS/NIO.

24-hour regional telephone Helpline set up by Women's Aid Federation Northern Ireland.

1995

Regional Forum on Domestic Violence established representing Government departments, statutory and voluntary agencies in Northern Ireland.

1996

Taking Domestic Violence Seriously, Monica McWilliams and Lynda Spence, HMSO 1996 published.

1996

PBNI introduces programme with perpetrators of domestic violence

Inter-agency groups established in each H&SST areas.

1997

Major North/South Conference on domestic violence held in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan.

1998

Paths to Prevention Conference organised by Regional Forum on Domestic Violence.

1998/99

Refuges in Ballymena and Lisburn opened.

1999

Family Homes and Domestic Violence (NI) Order passed and implemented.

A Practical Guide for Faith Communities Published.
