The Resource Centre
The Women's Resource Centre provides
support, information, advice and training to women who have suffered
domestic violence. Sessional childcare is available, although places
are limited.
Training includes;
- Journey to Freedom
- Basic Adult English and Maths
- Computer Literacy
- Beauty Therapy
- Delta Parenting Programme
All training is delivered by a qualified
tutor and qualifications are attainable on most courses. Concessions
are available to those in receipt of benefits.
The Refuge
Newry Women's Aid took over the management
of a new purpose built refuge on 20th March 2001. The refuge has 11
family bedrooms. Facilities include 9 kitchens, playroom. communal
living room, offices and support rooms. In addition there are two
units with en-suite facilities, specially adapted for women or children
with physical impairments. We also have 2 aftercare houses available
in the Newry/Warrenpoint area which are available to women and children
moving on from the refuge.
The aim of Newry Women's Aid is to provide
high quality temporary accommodation, support and advice to women
experiencing mental, physical or sexual abuse within the home. We
also assist women in their approaches to social security, housing and
other agencies. On-to-one support and group support sessions are
available in the refuge. We also aim to recognise and care for the
practical and emotional needs of the children in the refuge. Our
services are available to women with or without children. They are
also available to women who may be experiencing abuse in the home from
someone other than a male partner.
Funding
The refuge has been developed by Ulidia
Housing Association, with capital funding provided by the Department for
Social Development. revenue funding for the project is provided by
Ulidia Housing Association, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Newry
& Mourne Trust and charitable donations.
Children
There is a large children's playroom,
teenagers room and large outdoor playroom. The Children's Programme
caters for children from 0-16 years old. Additional activities
include delivery of the 'No Fear' Women's Aid Activity Pack for young
people.
Inter-Agency
Newry Women's Aid is the lead agency in the
Newry & Mourne Domestic Violence Forum.
