The Refuge

Newry Women's Aid took over the management of a new purpose built refuge on 20th March 2001.  The refuge has 11 family bedrooms.  Facilities include 9 kitchens, playroom. communal living room, offices and support rooms.  In addition there are two units with en-suite facilities, specially adapted for women or children with physical impairments.  We also have 2 aftercare houses available in the Newry/Warrenpoint area which are available to women and children moving on from the refuge.

The aim of Newry Women's Aid is to provide high quality temporary accommodation, support and advice to women experiencing mental, physical or sexual abuse within the home.  We also assist women in their approaches to social security, housing and other agencies.  On-to-one support and group support sessions are available in the refuge.  We also aim to recognise and care for the practical and emotional needs of the children in the refuge.  Our services are available to women with or without children.  They are also available to women who may be experiencing abuse in the home from someone other than a male partner.

Funding

The refuge has been developed by Ulidia Housing Association, with capital funding provided by the Department for Social Development.  revenue funding for the project is provided by Ulidia Housing Association, the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Newry & Mourne Trust and charitable donations.

Children

There is a large children's playroom, teenagers room and large outdoor playroom.  The Children's Programme caters for children from 0-16 years old.  Additional activities include delivery of the 'No Fear' Women's Aid Activity Pack for young people.

Inter-Agency

Newry Women's Aid is the lead agency in the Newry & Mourne Domestic Violence Forum.
